Do Insurance Companies Pay For Medical Foods?
YES, Medical Foods are reimbursed by most insurance plans including Medicare. Typically, a patient will a “pay pharmacy co-pay” at the time of receiving your medical foods, just like you would for a generic medication. The physician will then bill your insurance, as he or she would typically do.
Since, in most cases medical foods may not be found in your health plan’s formulary, the out-of-pocket co-pay may typically range from $35 to $50 per prescription medical food item dispensed by your physician, however; most patients find this a small price to pay for relief from pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, obesity, hypertension and other conditions that prevent them from living a full and rich life. (Your individual insurance plan may vary depending upon your “pharmacy formulary and co-pay contribution)
Your physician can charge you less depending upon your financial necessity, to learn more about this option, discuss your individual financial needs with your physician or his or her financial administrator.
